What is Spinology Spinology is a philosophy and practice which seeks to assist the body to function at its best possible level. It achieves this by helping to keep spinal bones (vertebrae) in their proper relationship with each other. The spine consists of twenty four movable vertebrae, from the back of the head to the low back. The sacrum and the coccyx are the lowest vertebrae in which the bones are fused together. The spine contains twenty five pairs of joints which are called facet joints. These are ‘proper’ joints which contain synovial fluid and are encapsulated in muscle. When a facet joint is subjected to a force which is greater than the muscles of the joint can absorb, the joint is pulled beyond its normal range causing the vertebra to be out of the proper relationship with the vertebrae above or below it. In Spinology this is called a spinal obtrusion. I call it misalignment of the vertebrae. The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The nerve roots are clusters of nerves going from the spinal cord to all parts of the body. The brain controls all the functions of the body, both physical and chemical using the nerve system as the communications network. The spine contains and protects the spinal cord. The nerve roots branch out through spaces in the spinal bone structure where one vertebra meets the one above and below it.When there is misalignment of the vertebra the environment of the nerve is altered. The alteration causes interference to the function of the nerve, acting like a dimmer switch on a light. It causes a reduction in the flow and quality of the communications between the brain and the body parts to which that nerve root is going. Those parts of the body can not then function at their optimum level as they are not fully controlled by the brain. Any of the main organs or glands can be affected by this nerve interference which can have serious consequences for the health of the body. When a facet joint is pulled beyond its proper range, muscles in the area contract to try to pull it back. The Spinologist analyses these muscles to determine where a force is required to help the muscles pull the joint back to within its proper range of movement. This allows the vertebra to maintain its correct relationship with the one above and below it. The nerve energy can then flow freely allowing the body to be the best it can be. The main philosophy of Spinology is for people to have their spine checked on a regular basis to keep the body working at its optimum level throughout their entire lives. Go to my Experiences page for information on disorders which I have seen the body heal when misalignments are corrected. Why do people go to a Spinologist Initially most of my clients come with a disorder of some kind, usually a back or limb pain or headaches. I always inform them of the benefits of having their back checked on a regular basis and many of them continue to do so. When a person is interested in maintaining a healthy body and mind throughout their whole life and has read and fully understood the enormity of the content of the above section it should be inconceivable not to be attending a Spinologist on a regular basis. After all, we eat food three or more times a day in order to fuel our bodies. Why would we use that money on food and have some of it go to waste because our body is not in its best possible condition to extract the maximum benefit from it. Following the initial few visits close together I believe a visit once every three or four weeks should be adequate for most people. What causes spinal obtrusion or misalignment. It is always caused by ‘a force being applied to the muscles of a facet joint which is greater than the force those muscles can absorb’. Those muscles are then strained or damaged and are unable to return the joint to within its proper environment. The force involved can come from something as severe as a car accident or as simple as playing childhood games, birth trauma to the mother or baby, falls, sport, heavy lifting, over-energetic dancing or lovemaking and the list goes on. Bad posture is often blamed, but I think the misalignments of the facet joints cause the bad posture. Clients repeatedly report they feel ‘taller’ or ‘straighter’ following a Spinology session. Is it like Chiropractic, Physiotherapy or Osteopathy. There are similarities and differences between all of these therapies. The above ones all diagnose and treat disorders. Spinologists find, and help the body to repair misalignments which may be the cause of the disorders. Does it hurt Spinology and CranioSacral Therapy, which I sometimes use, are painless. When I use deep muscle massage there is some discomfort but the client can control the amount of discomfort. When did Spinology Start Spinology was started in 1978/’79 by Reggie Gold, who was the head of a leading chiropractic training college in the United States. Reggie wanted to stay away from the medical route, X-rays etc. He wanted to keep it ‘hands only, spine only’ and decided the best way to do that was to start a whole new profession. He called it Spinology and set up The Philadelphia Spinal Tutorium where myself and the earliest Spinologists trained. When I was studying there in 1984, Reggie himself had his spine checked on a regular basis as he believed it improved his quality of life. As I write this, Reggie, now in his eighties continues to enjoy a healthy and active life. The first Irish Spinologist set up his practice in 1981, and the numbers have increased gradually since. I first set up my practice in Castledermot Co. Kildare in 1984, and have been in full time practice since then. I now have my practice in Carlow town. |
